In , he was despatched to the former Yugoslavia, where he spent the next four years reporting on the conflict in the region. Little moved to Johannesburg in for a two-year stint as South Africa correspondent. During this time, he reported on the aftermath of the genocide in Rwanda, the fall of President Mobutu and the outbreak of the Ebola virus in Zaire.
He then worked as the BBC's Africa correspondent from to and as the Paris correspondent from to Little returned to Moscow in to reflect on the Russian presidential elections with Mikhail Gorbachev. In his more recent role as a BBC special correspondent, he has reported widely on devolution and the questions around Scottish independence.
